Arsenal fail with £40m Suarez bid

Liverpool have rejected Arsenal's
improved offer of just over £40m
for Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.
The unusual bid of £40,000,001 was
designed to trigger a clause in the
player's contract, but Liverpool have
turned it down.
Under the terms of Suarez's deal, the
club are duty bound to consider any
offer for him in excess of £40m and
then inform the 26-year-old of it.
But they do not have to sell and have
now rejected two bids from Arsenal.
While Liverpool remain determined
to keep their prized asset, who
scored 30 goals for the club in 44
appearances last season, their
resolve is likely to be tested if the
bidding continues to rise.
Should Arsenal persist and have an
improved bid accepted, it could
come close to trebling their previous
highest initial outlay on a transfer.
The Gunners, whose first offer for
Suarez was £30m, paid a reported
£15m to Zenit St Petersburg for
Andrey Arshavin, in January 2009.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers
last week said he considered Suarez
to be at least as valuable as Edinson
Cavani, who recently joined Paris St-
Germain for £55m.
Real Madrid remain interested but
have yet to make a formal offer.
Suarez joined Liverpool's pre-season
tour of Australia at the weekend and
was expected to hold talks about his
future with Rodgers.
The Uruguay international flew to
Melbourne from Montevideo on
Sunday after being given extended
leave by the Reds following the
Confederations Cup.
He wants to leave Anfield to play for
a Champions League club despite
only signing a new long-term deal
last summer.
Speculation has grown about
Suarez's future since he was
punished with a 10-game ban at the
end of April for biting Chelsea's
Branislav Ivanovic.
The striker still has to serve six games
of that suspension and was also
banned in 2011 after being found
guilty of racially abusing Manchester
United's Patrice Evra.
Suarez joined Liverpool from Ajax in
January 2011 in a £22.7m deal.

Bale hands in transfer request

Gareth Bale has handed in a transfer request at Tottenham and agreed a six-year deal with Real Madrid worth £8.5m per year, according to Spanish sports newspaper Marca.

Napoli agree €37m fee with Real Madrid for Higuain

Napoli have agreed a €37 million fee
with Real Madrid for Gonzalo Higuain.
The Serie A club have had a fresh bid
for the Argentine accepted by the
Spanish club and Napoli are now
trying to convince the player to move
to the San Paolo.
Personal terms are yet to be agreed,
with Higuain's insistence on retaining
his image rights providing a
something of a stumbling block.
Higuain has two years remaining on a
Nike deal worth around €1.8m per
year but Napoli would prefer to take
control of his image rights and pay
him a more lucrative salary.
The forward earns a relatively modest
€75,000-a-week at Madrid and Napoli
are believed to have offered him a
deal in line with the €116,000-a-week
starting salary he had agreed with
Arsenal.
The Gunners had agreed personal
terms with Higuain but a transfer to
the Emirates Stadium stalled because
Madrid were holding out for a bigger
offer than the €27m submitted by the
Londoners.
Arsene Wenger subsequently switched
his attention to capturing Luis Suarez
from Liverpool after learning the
Uruguayan was interested in a move
to the Emirates.
Wenger is still believed to be
monitoring Higuain’s situation but
plans to bring him to Arsenal are on
the backburner as the Frenchman
attempts to land Suarez for £40m-
plus in a deal that would smash the
club transfer record.
Arsenal will not attempt to match
Napoli's bid but could come back into
the running for Higuain's signature if
he rejects a move to the Serie A club.
New manager Rafael Benitez targeted
Higuain for the vacant senior centre-
forward role in the team after selling
Edinson Cavani for €63m to Paris
Saint-Germain last week.
Although Madrid have claimed
Higuain is not for sale, it is
understood the Spanish club are now
ready to offload the forward, who has
spent six years at the Santiago
Bernabeu.

World gets first glimpse of royal baby

They looked like "a
normal couple" as they left the
hospital, one bystander said.
Of course, most normal couples don't
have a crowd of reporters,
photographers and random well-
wishers waiting for them to show off
their new baby.
Prince William and Catherine, the
Duchess of Cambridge, emerged from
St. Mary's Hospital in London on
Tuesday evening to give the public its
first view of the new heir to the British
throne, joking that the still-unnamed
boy had more hair than his father.
Catherine and William took turns
holding the child, wrapped in a
cream-colored blanket, as they waved
to well-wishers outside.
The couple is "still working on a name," William said, "so we'll have that as soon as we can." But he added, "He's got her looks, thankfully." The prince has already changed his first diaper, the couple told reporters. "It's very emotional. It's such a special time," Catherine said.
The couple left the hospital Tuesday evening, with William carrying the boy out in a car seat and installing him in the back of a black SUV. Then he got behind the wheel for the trip to their residence at Kensington Palace. On their way out, they walked out down the same steps where Diana, Princess of Wales, and Prince Charles gave the world its first look at Prince William 31 years ago.
"It was so exciting. It was fantastic," said Eliza Wells, one of those gathered outside the hospital. "The crowd erupted, because everyone's been waiting so long for it."
William and Catherine "both seemed
very relaxed, even with the press
there and the crowd," Wells said.
"They just seemed like a normal
couple."
Shortly before the departure, Charles
stopped by for a brief visit with his
first grandchild, accompanied by his
wife, Camilla, the Duchess of
Cornwall. He told reporters it was
"marvelous."
And Catherine's parents, Carole and
Michael Middleton, visited earlier, with
Carole Middleton telling reporters the
royal baby is "absolutely beautiful."
She said both mother and baby are
doing "really well" and that she and
her husband were "so thrilled" at
being grandparents.

World awaits for first glimpse of Britain's royal baby

The world was awaiting for the first
glimpse of Britain's royal baby
Tuesday with media camping outside
London's St. Mary's Hospital to
capture a photograph of Prince
William and Kate Middleton's first
child, a boy who is now third in line to
the British throne.
Hundreds of Britons and tourists
broke into song and dance outside
the palace gates as officials
announced that the future king was
born at 4:24 p.m. Monday, weighing 8
pounds, 6 ounces, at the central
London hospital — the same place
where William and his brother Harry
were born three decades ago.
"We would like to thank the staff at the
Lindo Wing and the whole hospital for
the tremendous care the three of us
have received," William and Kate said
in a statement released by Kensington
Palace on Tuesday. "We know it has
been a very busy period for the
hospital and we would like to thank
everyone -- staff, patients and visitors
-- for their understanding during this
time."
A Kensington Palace spokesman also
said that "Mother, son and father are
all doing well this morning."
The couple is expected to leave the
hospital either later Tuesday or
Monday morning. The baby's name
has not yet been announced.
The imminent arrival of the royal baby
was the subject of endless speculation
on social media and was covered for
days on live television around the
world, but in the end the royal family
managed to keep it a remarkably
private affair.
In line with royal tradition, a terse
statement Monday announced only
the time of birth, the infant's gender
and that mother and child were doing
well. It gave no information about the
baby's name, and officials would say
only that a name would be
announced "in due course."
"Her Royal Highness and her child are
both doing well and will remain in
hospital overnight," Monday's
statement said. William also issued a
brief statement, saying "we could not
be happier."
Officials said William, who was by his
wife's side during the birth, would
also spend the night in the hospital.
William's press aides had talked about
preserving Kate's "dignity" throughout
the pregnancy, and the way the birth
was handled showed that the palace's
impressive stagecraft could give the
royals a bubble of privacy even in the
age of Twitter and 24-hour news
broadcasts.
Just before 6 a.m., 31-year-old Kate,
also known as the Duchess of
Cambridge, entered the hospital
through a side door, avoiding the
mass of journalists camped outside.
Officials did not announce she was
hospitalized until more than an hour
later.
Later, as the world media gathered
outside to fill hours of airtime with
speculation, the baby's birth went
unannounced for nearly four hours,
allowing the royal couple the private
time they needed to act like a regular
family — a goal 31-year-old William
has cherished.
He was able to tell his father, Prince
Charles, and grandmother, Queen
Elizabeth II, about the birth and enjoy
his wife's company without having to
cope with the overwhelming media
and public desire for information.
By nightfall, the public still knew very
few details, but most people seemed
satisfied with the day's events.
London's landmarks, including the
London Eye, lit up in the national
colors of red, white and blue, and the
city had a party atmosphere
unmatched since last summer's
Olympics.
Outside the hospital, a man dressed
as a town crier in traditional robes
and an extravagant feathered hat
shouted the news and rang a bell.
A car carrying the announcement
drove from the hospital to the palace,
where the news was greeted with
shrieks of "It's a boy!" and strains of
"For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." A large
crowd rushed against the palace
fences to catch a glimpse of an
ornate, gilded easel displaying a small
bulletin formally announcing the
news.
The framed sheet of paper became
the target of a thousand camera
flashes as people thrust their
smartphones through the railings.
Hours after the initial announcement,
crowds were still surging forward to
get near the easel. Some placed
presents and bouquets in front of the
palace, while others waved Union Jack
flags and partied on the streets to
celebrate.
"It's a crazy atmosphere. Everyone is
getting very excited," said Andrew
Aitchison. "It's great to be part of
history, to say we were here and saw
it all happen."
More celebrations are expected
Tuesday, including gun salutes by
royal artillery companies to honor the
birth. Riders in uniform will trot past
the palace to Green Park, where six
field guns will fire 41 blank rounds.
Prince Charles spoke of his joy and
pride in becoming a grandparent for
the first time.
"It is an incredibly special moment for
William and Catherine and we are so
thrilled for them on the birth of their
baby boy," Prince Charles said in a
statement. "Grandparenthood is a
unique moment in anyone's life, as
countless kind people have told me in
recent months, so I am enormously
proud and happy to be a grandfather
for the first time, and we are eagerly
looking forward to seeing the baby in
the near future."
It could be some time before the
baby's name is made public. When
William was born, a week passed
before his name was announced.
Charles' name remained a mystery for
an entire month.
The royal birth at St. Mary's Hospital
recalled that of the baby's father,
William, in 1982. Many remember the
moment when he was carried out in
Princess Diana's arms with proud
father Prince Charles at their side.
The baby's gender had been of
particular interest because the
prospect of Kate's pregnancy had
prompted a change in the laws of
succession to ensure that a daughter
would not be passed over for the
crown by a younger brother.
No one can tell what political and
personal changes the intervening
years will bring, but the baby can be
expected to become the head of state
of 16 countries, including Britain,
Australia and Canada. The child will
also eventually become Supreme
Governor of the Church of England.
The little prince represents a living link
to Britain's imperial history as the
great-great-great-great-great-
grandchild of Queen Victoria, who
ruled at the peak of British power.
Many Britons had hoped that William
and Kate would start a family shortly
after their gala 2011 wedding, which
drew a global television audience in
the hundreds of millions.
The couple waited, however, until
William was nearly finished with his
military work as a search-and-rescue
helicopter pilot based at an air base in
a remote island off the coast of Wales.
That allowed Kate to ease into royal
life, and to become more comfortable
in the spotlight, before becoming a
parent. It also allowed her to play a
supporting role during Queen
Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee
celebrations last summer.
The first months of her pregnancy
were not easy, and she was
hospitalized in early December with
acute morning sickness that left her
weak and dehydrated. She seemed to
recover her stamina fairly quickly and
made a series of public appearances
until the final weeks, drawing praise
for her poise and good cheer.
The royal couple and their newborn
are expected to spend much of their
time in the coming years in renovated
quarters at Kensington Palace, where
William and Harry also spent much of
their childhood.
Royal officials say Kate and William will
try to give their child as normal an
upbringing as possible, a challenging
goal in an age when the British royals
are treated as major world celebrities.
"He'll have to be protected all the
time," said Edward Bentley, from near
London. "But they'll make him seem
normal and connected to the public
for sure."

Real Madrid will not sign Ibrahimovic or Verratti, insists Perez

The Blancos president has made
it clear that Carlo Ancelotti has
no intention of raiding his
former employers this summer
Florentino Perez has insisted that Real Madrid will not attempt to sign Paris Saint-Germain duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco Verratti this summer.
A number of recent reports have
suggested that new Madrid coach
Carlo Ancelotti was keen to lure the powerful attacker and the Italy
international away from his former club. However, Perez has now stressed that the Liga giants will not make a move for either of the duo - nor will they be signing anyone else from PSG. "Ancelotti has not asked us to sign any players from Paris Saint- Germain," the Madrid president was quoted as saying by L'Equipe . "I can guarantee PSG fans that we will not go after any of their players. We will not attempt to sign Ibrahimovic, nor Verratti." Madrid have so far secured the services of Casemiro, Daniel Carvajal, Isco and Asier Illarramendi this summer, but Perez recently hinted that they are not yet finished in the transfer market this summer.

Liverpool have final say on Suarez's future, insists Rodgers

With the striker making no attempt to hide his desire to leave the club, and Arsenal set to make a £40 million offer, the Anfield boss maintains the player cannot force an exit Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that Luis Suarez will not be able to orchestrate a transfer away from the club this summer.
The 26-year-old has made no secret of his intention to leave Anfield - publicly voicing admiration for Real Madrid and talking up his delight at being linked with Arsenal, while the north London outfit are preparing a £40 million offer. But Rodgers says Liverpool will have the final say on a possible departure for Suarez, as he is keen for no player to disrespect the club.
"This is something we will control,"Rodgers told reporters. "This situation will not be controlled by the player. I am very strong on the values of the club, where we are and how we operate. "Football and society is different nowadays, the [transfer] market is totally different and players can create different ways to open it up. "But I have always said that there is no player bigger than Liverpool and that is something we are very strong on. "Do I expect him to stay? Very much so. A lot has been said in the off season, but the reality is that he is very much a player of importance.
Every player has a value and a worth, but it doesn't mean we are going to sell him." Suarez joined up with the rest of the squad in Australia on Sunday after being afforded an extended break following the Confederations Cup.
Rodgers, who previously revealed that the striker will take part in
Wednesday’s pre-season clash with
Melbourne Victory, plans on
discussing future plans with the
former Ajax man during the tour.
"I will do what I have done with the rest of the players and sit down with him," Rodgers said. "The reality is that we do have one or two things to clear up, but that will be done and we will continue to work. "Luis and I have been in regular contact, but by the time we got here on Sunday night and had a bite to eat, it was late. We have that sort of relationship, though, where
communication is open. I always tell him what I feel. "Luis is here as expected, he is an integral part of squad and we will chat at some stage. The bottom line is he's a Liverpool player. We have only had one bid for him and it was nowhere near the value we have of him and there has been nothing since."

Miley Cyrus -- Of Course I'm Singing About Ecstasy, You Idiots

Here's a shocker ... Miley Cyrus just admitted she actually IS singing about ecstasy in her new song "We Can't Stop" -- claiming she and the song's producer originally lied about the song's real lyrics in order to get radio play. You'll recall, the song caught a lot of flack for its overt drug references -- including a line that sounds like "dancing with molly" (aka MDMA).The song's producer insisted the line was actually "dancing with Miley" -- but the singer is now saying it was all a lie.Miley told the Daily Mail, "If you're aged ten [the lyric is] Miley.
If you know what I'm talking about
then you know. I just wanted it to be played on the radio and they've
already had to edit it so much." And if that wasn't clear enough, she added, "I don't think people have a hard time understanding that I've grown up.
You can Google me and you know
what I'm up to -- you know what the lyric is saying."And now here's the really hot music video.
